Leadership Video: Character Tests at West Point
In May, I had the opportunity to speak to 600+ people at the Chick Fil A Leadercast that was simulcasted into our local venue. A big thrill was following John Maxwell. I also spoke right before Coach K!
Here is the video of that presentation. The character tests cadets face at West Point builds leaders. That is the premise of this talk.
Question:
What character tests have prepared you for leadership?
Dave, thanks for bringing back the memories of what has helped shape me at USMA that brought about a foundation of courage and confidence. I hope to always carry those with me to do the right thing. I also agree with your views on character and competence. Great job on emphasing how habits create and maintain character. Enjoyed it.
Tim,
Good habits and bad habits are all formed the same way. One decision at a time. That is good news for all of us because we can all change our bad habits of character. Thanks for the comments my friend!
How is it that the basics, the fundamentals of any sport, or any event – which ultimately are beneficial have the component of pain preceding awareness? At least from this “goat’s” perspective, it still works that way as I grow in Christ and as an individual. Every day is a new day and the struggles – if kept in perspective – always have a lesson.
Thanks Dave; nicely put.
That’s probably why they are called growing pains! And why a workout that doesn’t make us uncomfortable is probably not doing us any good.
Dave, great message. My West Point experience combined with my Christian walk guides me daily. Thanks for taking the message to all who need to hear it.
Thanks Kevin. Both guide me as well.
Dave, it’s messages like yours that makes us West Pointers reflect on who we really are. Too often, we may get caught up in the rigors of our respective industries and become pressured to act uncharacteristically of who we really are.
You’re reminding us to make the proper, more difficult, decision.
Thanks.
Jim-
I have not always done what is right when I have become caught up in business as well. These talks and the training I do help remind me of what I truly believe in.
