Platform Skills–Getting Noticed
If a blogger/consultant screams on the internet does anyone notice? I was wondering when I left my comfortable job in the corporate world if people would hear me when I screamed.
I read a lot about consulting in the months before starting my company and in the months since. There was a lot of great advice for me to get my ideas launched into cyberspace and begin to build a tribe.
Then two weeks ago, I received an early e-copy of Michael Hyatt’s book Platform which hits the shelves today. It will be my guide from now on.
I left the corporate world in December 2011 to pursue my passion for building and training leaders. I began using Michael Hyatt’s blog among others to guide how I built my website and utilized Twitter. But, I felt my research was disjointed.
I was piecing together advice and choosing people to follow without really knowing if I was on the right track. The book Platform is the track I am going to ride.
There are two lessons Platform made loud and clear to me.
- Content Matters: If you deliver poorly, no amount of marketing expertise can help you.
- Help Others: Continuously serve others with your content.
Yes. Michael spends many chapters helping people like me understand the ins and outs of social media and the new paradigm it brings to marketing. But, no amount of marketing is going to help a half-baked, self-serving consultant get noticed.
So thanks to Michael Hyatt and his book Platform, here is my pledge to you moving forward:
- I will do everything in my power to bring value to your life through what I do on this site or for your organization.
- I will try new things and build new products that I believe will make others better.
- I will listen and respond to your feedback because that is the best way I know of to understand your needs.
- I will serve my God first, others second, and myself third.
My prayer is that when I leave this earth I will have fulfilled my purpose: To lead good people to become the great people God designed them to be.
I choose to accomplish my purpose by helping others grow to become leaders of character that lead well and change the world around them.
The first steps in getting noticed have been this blog and the talks I have done for multiple organizations over the last few months. But stay tuned.
I am now beginning to offer training on Building Low Maintenance Teams. A video series and a book are in the works. These are the next steps in building my Platform. You can order Platform here.
